Santa Phobia
Boo and I went into the city for the first time in um… maybe ever for Boo??? I knew the Christmas decorations were up so that prompted the visit.
We went into Myers to look at wreath’s for the front door and found that Santa was already here! Not only that but they had a FREE play area with train rides through Santa’s cave on the Santa Express. After Boo had ridden the Santa Express, she asked to go and see Santa to get a photo for Grandma and Papa.
Boo has a Santa Phobia. What a girl, facing her phobia head on!
Santa was not visible, he was in the other Santa cave. Last year, Boo would become hysterical if you came within 50 feet of a Santa. Her heart would race, she would become clammy and she would hyperventilate. Shopping last December was terrible and required lots of strategic planning to avoid any visualisation of the red suited one!
We dutifully lined up. I think hidden in the cave must have been at least three Santa’s. (Hooray Myer for reducing child waiting times)!
Boo’s turn came! We followed Santa’s elf into the cave and into Santa’s room, where Rudolph was snoring peacefully on the floor at his feet, and the big man himself was seated in his big chair.
The breathing sped up, and fear was visible in her eyes but she stood by the door just a couple of metres from the man in the red suit, and told him quietly that she would like two kittens and some lollies for Christmas, and then turned to the door and said to me “Lets go now”
My mum has photos of me and my brother sitting on Santa’s knee every year from our first Christmases, until way after we stopped believing.
Check out my brother’s outfit!!! I would cry too if I was dressed like that!

That is such a cute photo!
And that Santa cave sounds awesome – might have to take the girls in to check it out.
I haven’t risked the ‘Santa’ thing for a few years now – I remember a couple of years ago at the Sth Melb market they had a Santa walking around giving out lolly-pops and I had to quickly turn the other way when I saw him headed in our direction. Monet was petrified in the pram… We have my in-law’s business Xmas party next weekend with a special guest arriving giving out pressies for the few children who will be there. Hope Monet will stand her ground and be brave!
What a sensible Santa cave. I never thought of that – what a very good idea, keeps the traffic flow sensible. (I am impressed with Boo, too, yay!)
Awwww, look at you!
Aren’t you the cutie pie?
I had a little chuckle at Boo still managing her request despite her fear. Good for her! I think that girl would fit in well over at our house!
Amazing how much Boo and you look alike!
What a brave girl! I remember being afraid of Santa as kid also, no matter if I was brave or not, that Santa is just scary!
Good for Boo. She’s such a brave little trooper. And look at you!! The once and future Mrs. Kravitz wannabe.
Sorry. Couldn’t resist.
Guera – Definately take the girls… but watch out for the Sand Wizard at the entrance! She’ll get your money!
Melody – Maybe this year Monet will be ready for Santa? Before you ask – yes he does make it to the UAE, and in a much grander scale than you probably see here!
Rhubarb – Its about time someone had a good idea like that!
Tiff – Yes, last year I had to write a letter for her as she was so worried Santa wouldn’t know what to bring. Last year 2 fish and lollies, this year 2 kittens and lollies… I detect a theme!
Iris – Boo is lucky enough to have avoided the mega-cheeks!
Lou – *chuckle* *chuckle*
Oh Santa is a big scary freak, though, and the getting over the fear of santa carp is, I think, a bad thing for kids to learn.
JMO!
Mind you, it was one of those Myer cavey things that helped dd deal with the big scary freak because he gave her a lanyard – ooh yes, nothing like a bribe with Myer written all over it (in Christmas colours).
Loved the photo of the two of you – those shorts would bring a few tears true!
Jeanie – Every year she comes away with the ‘prize’ in the photographers attempts to bribe her closer and earn their money!
