Movie Night
For a long, long time, Boo never watched television. ABC kids or a Dora DVD would be on in the background as she played but she never really watched until about 6 months ago. As for watching a movie. NEVER. 20 mins in front of the box was about all she could manage before she would be off doing other things.
Oh, there were many a day, I wished for the TV to entertain her *sigh*
The past 6 months have seen her watching a handful of favourite programs, but the last month or so has seen her become the movie queen.
Last Thursday we began our weekly movie night.
Movie night starts after bath time. Once in our pyjamas, we make a bowl of popcorn and pour a small fizzy drink each and then settle down on the couch to watch a movie of Boo’s choice.
Last week we had Little Mermaid II, and for this weeks cultural experience, Barbie in Swan Lake.
As my princess went off to sleep tonight, she happily told me that she loves movie night, it is her most favourite thing to do at the moment.
And you know what?
I’m loving movie night too.

We have family movie nights, too, on Saturdays. It is great, popcorn, movie, all on the couch.
Does sound delightful – but wait until you watch all those bloody Barbie Movies and you mightn’t be loving it so much! I, however have enjoyed many kids flicks – KungFu Panda, Coraline, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Up…. (And yes, i have watched all those Barbie Movies!)
Yeah, those Barbie movies are pretty tedious (and I know you’ll have to sit through all of them!) but I think what is so nice is the security of the regular thing you do together. We had Celebrity Masterchef night once a week when it was on, I would tape the episode so we could watch it on a night and at a time that suited us and had a treat of dinner in front of the TV. The kids loved it.
We do that sometiems too. Boo is right – Movie nioght rocks
That sounds wonderful!
We never had anything like it. Couldn´t you have told some over 30 years earlier?
Thea – Thanks for dropping by
Melody – The Barbie movies have been on constantly (when Boo’s ballet concert DVD is not on) since we got back from holidays *sigh*
Sunny – I don’t mind Barbie movies until I’ve seen them more than a couple of times!
Amanda – Movie night does rock
Iris – Ummm 30 years ago? The video player wasn’t even invented!
Movie night is an integral part of our down-time… and even more so as they grow older. Sometimes just sitting together and not focusing on each other allows the serious conversations to happen spontaneously. The only problem is finding a movie that we all like, and which has an appropriate rating! xoxo
