A few weeks ago, I had my flu vaccination, as all good hospital staff are strongly encouraged to do. I then made Boo an appointment at the State Immunisation Clinic to have hers, as all good parents WERE strongly encouraged to do.

There was obviously a lot of good parents trying to get appointments, as I had to wait 3 weeks for an appointment at the clinic, and having heard some dodgy GP immunisation stories in my days, working in health, the state clinic is my only option.

In the mail last Thursday, I received a letter from the government/medicare advising me to take advantage of the free flu vaccination for under 5’s, and strongly advising me my child needs this.

At 5pm on Thursday evening, the State Minister for Health appears in a ‘breaking news’ headline, advising the program in WA has been suspended due to a higher number of adverse effects than expected.

Boo was ecstatic when the clinic rang at 8am on Friday morning cancelling her ‘needle’ appointment.

On Friday, all other states were suspending their flu vaccine in under 5’s programs.

Then this arrives in the mail on Friday

Bird Flu

                                          Yes, you read it right!

A letter and a brochure asking/inviting Boo to be a part of a study trialling the new bird flu vaccine for 3-17 year olds.

No thinking or decision time required. This one is a flat out NO!

Disclaimer –

  • I am fully informed regarding the pros and cons of immunising my child.
  • I choose to immunise my child.
  • I swayed with the combined seasonal and swine flu vaccination, and am glad my child missed out.
  • I certainly would not allow her to be part of vaccine trials.

Absolutely right. I’d be making the same decision. Hate not having my kids immunised for winter though.

Hell no. Timing is everything in that campaign, obviously – bad timing…

I took Stella to our GP for her 12 month immunisations on Thursday, her actual birthday. We have been waiting for both girls to 100% well before giving them the swine flu jab and based on the fact that when Stella gets a cold it goes straight to her breathing, I was considering giving her the flu jab as well. OHMYGOD I am so relieved we didn’t go through with it. When I heard the news that evening I spent a worried night monitoring Stella. I know she only had her regular immunisations but I was still concerned. Ron and I had our swine flu jabs but thats it for flu vaccinations in our family this winter. I will be medicating us with fresh squeezed orange juice and lots of healthy food instead!

The animal rights activists obviously won; there are no more animal experiments, they take kids now, huh?! OMG, good thing you missed out on that one!
I got a shot against swine-flu and soon after they said the virus might´ve changed…
Fingers crossed you guys stay healthy!

I sit solidly beside your disclaimer – and your choice.

Don’t ask me my opinion on the Swine flu injection. I will not go there as I am not willing to expend the energy. However, I will say:

TESTING SHOULD BE FINALISED BEFORE RELEASE of any immunomodulatory agent.

    One word:

    Thalidomide

    (off soap box now)
    xx

Max was due to have his Swine Flu was in one month {he’ll be 6 months} and whilst I have given his all of his other vacinations without any hesitation I was really worried about this one for some reason. To be honest I’m relieved that I no longer have to make the decision, but so sad that it comes at such a high price.
