Black friends, blue friends…

Sorry Dr Seuss tried to possess me for a moment ;)

Boo rang her best friend from school this morning as she had been off sick all week, they chatted and before saying goodbye they told each other, ‘I love you.’ Then I spoke to her mum, Em, who invited us for dinner. Darn sinusitis accompanied by headache meant we had to decline, and eat toasted cheese sandwiches at home.

Anyway got me thinking about friendships.

I have just had a wonderful holiday in Malaysia staying with my gorgeous friend. We had a falling out years ago, both of us moving away from Australia to different countries, and essentially losing contact.  A couple of years ago when she was here on holidays we were able to clear the air, we’ve caught up for lunch or dinner when she’s been in Perth, so spending a week together was fabulous.

I have my ‘girls.’ They are always there. Four of us did our nursing training together, and we have a token non-nurse. These are the friends you take for granted. The friendships you sometimes forget to nurture. Those that will always be there regardless, you hope!

I have my social networking friends, some of which are now my IRL friends. These friends are easier to nurture (except in assignment time) because they are always findable somewhere in the social networking world!

Back to how Boo’s two best friends fit in.

I have met two wonderful new friends through school. These are the easiest friendships to nurture especially seeing I’m a bit of a crap friend who forgets to phone, and hardly ever gets around to organising anything.  We see each other at drop offs and pick ups, take the kids to things together (because you can’t squeeze more than two booster seats into the back of the average car), have play dates, sit through the gymnastics hour, navigate the school stuff together that everyone expects you to know but never tells you.

Guess I’m lucky that Boo made friends with kids whose mum’s I like :)

One of the best skills for a daughter to possess, I believe.
