Princess Boo loves a bit of pampering. She loves it on the rare occasion she gets to come to the salon for a mini-manicure and pedicure. She loves having her feet, head and back massaged.
I can only blame myself… or her numerous overseas Aunts who first enticed her to the salon for a mini-manicure and pedicure for her 3rd birthday, prior to a wedding we attended in Abu Dhabi (where every second shop is a salon or spa)!
I can also blame Grandma who on our numerous trips to Bali has always taken Princess Boo for a foot or head massage down the beach.
At the ripe old age of 6, I figured the Little Princess Spa package was right up her alley. I had concerns that she wouldn’t last through 2 hours of pampering.
Oh how wrong I was to be concerned!
We were in fits of giggles before our massages as Princess Boo donned adult size disposable knickers, and ran around our massage tables like a child of Tarzan!
I never heard a sound from Princess Boo in the half hour during her massage, and then I heard her whisper incredulously “Mum, she’s rubbing sand on me!”
Me and the 2 Balinese massage ladies again were in fits of laughter as we explained body scrubs. We also then had to explain body masque as the cream she was smothered in began to dry a bit like wax.
As I enjoyed the rest of my massage, body scrub and masque, Princess Boo was whisked away for her manicure and pedicure.
After my pampering session, I found Princess Boo enjoying a blow dry after her hair wash and scalp massage.
She has begun asking if we can do the same thing in Perth. I am yet to find a spa and/or salon that has a package for little girls, and for a reasonable cost. I think it will just have to be a special treat on our overseas trips!

We’re back! We’ve had a lovely break in Bali, but it’s also nice to be home ![]()
In the under 20 hours I’ve been home, I’ve achieved
- 5 loads of washing
- 11 hours of sleep
- Front and back lawns have been mowed
- 2 hours of ‘school work’ (maths and reading) at Boo’s request (yes, she’s a nerd)!
- Cleaned the guinea pig hutch
- Removed one dead rat from the dog’s mouth
Things to be achieved later today
- Finish unpacking
- Fold and iron the stuff that comes off the line plus the stuff that came off the line before I left
- Phone Centrelink – procrastination setting in with this one!
- Grocery shopping because bread, milk and cereal is about all that fills my cupboards
- Write blog posts on our holiday
- Read blogs
- Pay bills with money I don’t have

A large focus of my parenting is fostering open communication with Boo, and building her emotional intelligence.
The day care Boo attended for 4 years was very committed to developing emotional intelligence in children, and this helped a lot with reinforcing what we were doing at home particularly around identifying and learning how to deal with feelings and emotions.
As for communicating and connecting with Boo, I have several strategies. I want Boo to always be able to talk to me about anything and everything with the knowledge that she won’t be judged and that I am here to help her delve through the muddy waters of life as well as share her good times.
A couple of years ago, I had dinner with the lovely Fe from Lumsdaine Photography and her sons. At dinner time Fe and her boys do Best and Worst, where each of them has a turn of talking about the best thing and the worst thing of their day. I felt privileged to be asked to join in by the boys and I was awed that Fe and her teen and pre-teen boys had such open and honest communication. Of course Best and Worst has also become a dinner time ritual at our house.
A few ago, Adele Feletto Publicity asked me if I’d like a sample of Wise Talk for Families to try. After reading the media blurb, it sounded like an excellent communication tool for Boo and I to use at bedtime
Wise Talk for Families – a new, unique and interactive story based board-game for Australian families encouraging parents and children to connect on a much more frequent basis in a more profound way.
Being a working, sole parent, and with Boo now at full time school, I sometimes feel there are days where we have had no meaningful communication or quality time together. We were both excited to try out Wise Talk for Families when it arrived, I wouldn’t call it a board game though, though Boo does call it the the talking game!
Boo selects one of the alphabet discs which directs you to a page in the booklet included, and then with the help of the booklet we share stories. The book is based on the fundamentals of ASK, GIVE and SHARE, and helps the parent open the communication for 5-10 minute session of undivided attention.
Over the past couple of weeks, while we’ve been using Wise Talk for Families we have not only shared stories on the topic we have selected but it has opened the channels for Boo to communicate other things related to our discussion. Most of the topics for discussion also foster my development of Boo’s emotional intelligence.
Boo looks forward to playing the game every night before bed, and has even roped grandma in whilst she’s been babysitting over the past couple of weeks.
Wise Talk for Families is suitable for children 3 years and over, and is available for $29.95 from the WiseInside website, where you will also find more information. If part of your parenting strategies revolve around communicating well with your child, I highly recommend it!
Disclaimer – I received a free sample of Wise Talk for Families but was under no obligation to write this post, or promote the product.

Friday afternoon, I lost hours to bagging Reindeer Noses (and consuming far too many Maltesers)! Thank you Puddles and Gumboots and Just Me for the inspiration, and for saving me spelling 30 names to Boo for Christmas cards!
We’ve had drama rehearsals, and Boo’s very first drama production where she played the role of one of the children who lived in the shoe! Mummy brag moment – I am very proud of her for nailing her lines and cues
There went Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon.
In my moment of organised chaos, I mistakenly thought it was already the 18 December on Sunday and lovingly prepared a picnic to take Boo to Carols by Candlelight. I got an awesome car park and unloaded our stuff.
There was no-one about!!!
I twigged then that it was only the 11 December *sigh*
Boo and I had a lovely picnic by the river. I think it’s the first time in weeks we truly have had any quality time. Just the two of us, no distractions (unless you call fighting over pate a distraction)? Boo thinks it was the nicest night ever and we should do it every night!
I have now found myself with a whole extra week before Christmas. I might actually get some Christmas cards written, and those headed overseas may actually even arrive before Christmas???
I may even get some Christmas gift shopping done but what I’m getting remains a mystery to me!
This is another week of chaos, and to top it off, the commencement of the school holidays means the chaos increases with dragging a 6 year old from pillar to post!
