I Do Believe in Fairies!

2010 August 1
by MissyBoo

Today I went with two of my favourite 4 year olds to the pre-screening of ‘Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue.’

Tink

The DVD is due for release in September according to the promotional material we received in the mail earlier this week. I am hoping to get my hands on a give away copy before then, so I can share the magic with you.

Boo has her heart set on receiving a copy very soon! Her and her friend both absolutely loved it and cannot wait to see it again.

What I will say before I do a review is, this is probably my favourite of the three Tinker Bell movies, and this is the first time Boo has sat still all the way through a cinema movie.

Pre-schooler Conversations

2010 July 30
by MissyBoo

Sometimes you get to overhear some excellent stories told by 4 year olds.

Sometimes they’re conversations that there is no way are you going to join in!

This is one of THOSE conversations between Boo and her friend Em, from the backseat of the car.

Boo:  When is Molly going to have puppies? (Molly is Em’s dog)

Em:    Maybe soon? A boy dog came to our house the other day, because you need a boy dog and a girl dog to make the puppies.

Boo: What was the boy dog’s name?

Em:  Hmm… I can’t remember. But Boo, do you know what happened?

Boo: No!

Em:  The boy dog came for a whole day, and a whole night. And the boy dog kept going on top of Molly. Molly was on the bottom and the boy dog was on the top. The boy dog kept going on top of Molly.

Em and Boo, are now having fits of giggles discussing how the boy dog was on the top and the girl dog was on the bottom. I’m pretty sure Boo had absolutely no idea of what that all meant ;)

Boo: Em maybe we could pretend to be dogs? I’ll be the girl dog on the bottom, and you can be the boy dog on top.

More fits of giggles.

Me thinking. Ah, yeah? Maybe not

Kindy is Masterchef Cool

2010 July 26
by MissyBoo

I know I enjoyed kindy (except for those little warm bottles of milk)! I’m just not entirely sure my kindy was as much fun as Boo’s kindy?

Term 1 was all about the 5 senses culminating in an incursion from Sci-Tech to tie it altogether.

Term 2 was all about the sea. Things that live in the sea, things found on the beach. An excursion to AQWA (aquarium) and a pirate party were highlights.

Term 3 is set to be even more FUN! The theme is Food and will be known as ‘Kindy Masterchef,’ with weekly ‘Master Classes.’ Now those of you that follow me on Twitter will be aware that Boo is a big fan of Masterchef (she didn’t quite manage staying awake for all of last night’s finale).

Yesterday, talking to an elderly man on the train who asked what she wants to do when she grows up, her reply was to be on Masterchef! In Matt Preston style, she critiques every meal I put in front of her. Apparently on Friday night, the sausages were a touch overcooked, the onion gravy was not well seasoned, the mash was perfect and the other vegetables, passable!

And if that’s not enough there is an incursion from Bunnings where the children will be making their own serving trays. One of Boo’s (and my) favourite places is Bunnings, so for her this is very exciting.

Oh and they have a band coming out to play for the school in a couple of weeks, too!

It seems only fitting to put Boo’s first funny faced school photo here.

Monkey Girl

2010 July 19
by MissyBoo

Have I mentioned Boo likes to climb?

Well, she does and it drives me insane!

Boo started walking at about 10 months old, she was climbing before that. The first incidence of heart stopping fear on my behalf was around the same time she found her feet. I was hanging out the laundry, from the corner of my eye I spotted my little climber standing on the glass topped outdoor setting, wobbling in the precarious way only new toddlers can.

Since that first incident I have become relatively blasé about the climbing. I would have had a heart attack  way more grey hairs from worry than I already have. Boo climbs constantly and always has a war wound to show for it. Quite frankly I’m surprised we haven’t yet required a trip to the emergency department.

There is a small scar on her lip from a very early incident. There was the black eye from a climbing misadventure at day care

There are always some decent sized bruises, or some huge bumps on her head. There is the broken front tooth. Currently, she is sporting a stomach full of grazes from tree climbing at little kindy, a bump on her forehead, and this lovely facial wound (which she’s really looking forward to showing her friends this week)!

I will take responsibility for her need to climb at the playground. I hate getting sand in my shoes – she taught herself to swing about a year ago – and now she’s worked out how to get herself on the monkey bars!

Out & About

2010 July 15
by MissyBoo

Yesterday, Boo and I attended the opening of the new Toys ‘R’ Us / Babies ‘R’ Us store down the street.

Boo was very excited and about the first person through the door! We had a lovely browse, adding things to the wish list for a birthday and Christmas.

And I have to mention, how lovely and friendly all the staff were. You don’t get that often these days!

There were characters, a bear, a giraffe, Homer & Bart, Elmo. I discovered Boo is still very scared of grown-ups in costumes. She has a phobia of Santa, clowns, characters, anyone with a mask. My confident child turns to a clingy, shy, shaky mess!

So when it was suggested she have photos with Bruin Bear, she wasn’t doing it without me.

What I Do When I’m Not Twittering

And so begins another work week.

I’m looking forward to getting back to work today. The weekend with Boo has nearly driven me insane. Four days of almost non-stop rain has turned my active, outdoors loving child into a Monster (yes, that’s Monster with a capital, bolded M)!

I actually quite like my job even when I’m insanely busy, and chasing my tale to meet deadlines. This month is one of those insanely busy times for me, being end of my reporting year, end of my reporting quarter, end of a reporting third! For each little task I complete, I get a little leap of joy in my chest (sad, I know). Even though I know for each task that is reported, there is a clean slate and the cycle begins again.

Oh you don’t know what I do?

I do stuff! I have absolutely no idea how to explain what I do. In theory, my job is to make hospitals safer. That is – safer for patients.

Did you know that a whopping 10% of patients suffer harm in hospital as a result of human error? Yes, you can go and Google that.

Like What?

  • we might share some nasty germs with you, germs you didn’t bring in with you
  • we might make you sick (or worse) by giving you the wrong medication, the wrong dose, or something that doesn’t agree with you
  • we might inadvertently cause that deep vein thrombosis in your leg that travels to your chest and/or brain and…
  • we might do the wrong operation
  • we might even leave some of our equipment behind when we sew you up
  • we might make you so sick, we might even accidently kill you

Being that I work in a hospital, and I may on occasions get my hands dirty doing some midwifery type skills (albeit very rarely these days), I count myself in the ‘WE.’

I work on ways to reduce human error in healthcare. For every little improvement, I feel triumphant, especially when there are things I have spent years beating my head on a brick wall over.

I get to investigate some interesting cases when things go wrong.

I get astounded by some of the things people (health care workers) do… because I certainly was the perfect nurse and midwife!!!

I still get to see newborns (and cuddle them) every day too :)

What I dislike about my job is meetings. Endless, time consuming meetings. You know,  last week I achieved fairly much nothing in my 3 days at work except attend meetings.

I also dislike when I have to put on my extra-thick skin. People hate change, and I’m the implementer of change. Oh and of course people think I should be using my clinical skills in this climate of nursing/midwifery shortages, and will quite happily share that with me on a daily basis.

The next 3 days are going to be horrendously busy to ensure I meet my deadlines by the end of the month… but hey I have no meetings scheduled and I’m up for the challenge.

I’m guessing you probably still have no idea what I do – never makes any sense to anyone!

Scoring Bonus Child-free Hours

2010 July 9
by MissyBoo

It’s school holidays. For us it doesn’t really change our routine too much. I still work 3 days, Boo still attends ‘little’ kindy on those days, who implement a school holiday program with lots of fun things happening. In fact during the holidays, Boo would love to attend every day!

For me, I lose my one child-free, work-free day each week. I’m not complaining. The housework can wait. The groceries can wait. Social networking can wait. My eyebrow waxing cannot wait!

We were pencilled in for a play date today. Today is going to be wet, wild, woolly and cold.

Yesterday, play date’s mum rang with a fabulous idea. Let’s send the girl’s off for 3 hours to ‘The Fairies Shop.’ The fairy loving girls still get a play date but are entertained, amused and fed by someone else ;) Sounds pretty good to me!

Craft, games and dancing all in one afternoon, I can’t beat that!

Now I have some bonus me-time hours, I guess I’ll spend it unwisely? Best I see if I can get an appointment for my eyebrows!

Unabashed Bragging

2010 July 8

My blog. Therefore, I can brag!

‘Little’ kindy (3-5 year old kindergarten) as opposed to school kindy, send home a portfolio at the end of school term. School kindy, on the other hand verbally tell you your child is doing well (or I expect if they’re not, you’re the parent that’s asked to come in and see the teacher at pick up time).

Last term I was a bit disappointed with the portfolio. As much as Boo could achieve all the demonstrated tasks, they were tasks she has been achieving for a long, long time. I would have been happier to see what she was actually capable of, or what she was working toward.

This term the portfolio demonstrated things that Boo should be achieving at 4 and a half years old. I’m not going to brag about those, she met all the targets, and there was nothing that was news to me.

What made my heart sing with pride, was the summary statement :)

Okay so the teacher can’t spell but I assume Miss Boo is delightful… actually her school teacher used the word delightful as well.

Now if only she was delightful for me all of the time *sigh*

Marshmallows

2010 July 6
by MissyBoo

Around here we have plenty of marshmallows. Pink ones. Orange ones. Yellow ones. White ones.

Actually, there may not be any pink ones left?

We love marshmallows at this time of year. Marshmallows go very well with hot chocolate… not so much with the mint hot chocolate!

Marshmallows are especially good when you’re a bit sad (see here).

It’s no surprise really that I may  be turning into a marshmallow.

Boo has outgrown her 12’’ bike. Well nearly! She has a birthday in a few months, followed by Christmas, so off I went to the toy sales with a plan to lay-by a bigger bike. Not only a bigger bike, but a Tinker Bell bike. It is purple and pink, with flowers, oh and did I mention, it is a Tinker Bell bike?! ?

The line for lay-by was L-O-N-G… VERY L-O-N-G. So I purchased the said Tinker Bell bike and hid it away. Hiding it from myself as much, if not more than hiding it from Boo!

So the bike stayed in hiding for a little over 24 hours…

Long enough to watch Boo ride that almost too small, old bike one more time.

Damn you, lay-by line!!!

Pirate Boo

2010 July 2
by MissyBoo

Yesterday was the end of term party for Boo’s kindy class. This term has been spent learning about the ocean, the creatures that live in the ocean, and all things seaworthy. It was fitting that the end of term party was a pirate party…

On the afternoon before, there was NO WAY Boo was going to the party as a pirate, despite owning pirate accessories and  clothes we could make pirate-y!

Apparently, she was going as a butterfly!

A quick trip to the shops to get some extra ingredients for cupcakes to take to the party, resulted in spotting the PERFECT pirate costume for my princess. Despite funds being a bit tight at the moment, I bought it for her.

Miss Boo needed a bit of cheering up, she’d sobbed herself to sleep the night before over friendships *sheesh* I thought this drama started in pre-teens not four and a half year olds!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The party was great fun, and Boo cannot wait until her pirate outfit is clean, and she can wear it again… so she is wearing it dirty, today ;)

Oh and I think I should join in Brenda’s FlogYoBlog Friday
